Using dropbox to share stickies
Post by RrnR on Aug 7th, 2017, 08:26am

I just discovered this application. Brilliant. But I want to use it at home and at work and use a dropbox folder to share the data.

I've tried telling both work and home installations to move the data location to a folder in Dropbox. It sort of worked for a short while but then Dropbox snagged because it couldn't sync store.mdb, I guess because Stickies had it open.

Is it possible to achieve this? - preferably transparently, requiring no manual actions to copy files about the place.

To recap, I want to create a sticky on my home PC, and for it to automagically appear at work as well

In short, no, it won't do that. Stickies doesn't sync.

A slightly longer answer is that what you're tried will work, but you need to ensure that you only ever run Stickies on one "side" at a time.

OK, but what you are saying is that stickies would have to be shut down on the PC that you weren't at, right? Like, I'm assuming that it keeps the database file open as long as the tray icon is displayed?

Yes, that's right, the MDB file is held open while the app is running.

OK, is it really necessary to keep it open? You already have a timer that kicks in after N seconds of inactivity and saves the sticky you are editing. Why not have it close the MDB file also. It could be opened on demand.

I'll explain my setup: I have two PCs - work and home, and they are set up pretty much identically. I had set up Sticky to make it's data files in a Dropbox folder seen by both PCs. Heres the point: I am the only one who uses these PCs and (obviously!) only ever one at a time.

If the MDB file changes because I'm creating/editing a sticky at work, the home machine isn't at use. If the MDB file at home was closed, then Dropbox could sync it, at the moment it can't. If this change was implemented, then when I move from work to home, Sticky would close the MDB file at work after N seconds of inactivity, when I get home, the MDB file there would be fresh, and Dropbox could sync it back to the work PC because the work PC would have closed the file.

I can't see any downside to closing the MDB file when the PC isn't in use and opening it on demand.

I use 'Send/Copy to File', maybe you can sink the 'Transfer File' thru DropBox. As you say, you are not in the same place at the same time.
