xx Sync to mult pcs with dropbox- question
« Thread started on: Aug 10th, 2015, 11:47am »

Hey, hope this is possible.
Tried using the network sync, but biggest issue appears to be both pcs must be online to make it work right?

I gave up on that and am now using dropbox to sync stickies.
This works just fine, the only issue I have is that the skin I use (diehard.ssk which I love btw) does not sync on both pcs. The skin invariably reverts to the default skin regardless of where I place the skin on either pc. The note content works fine.

Just wondering if you smart people have any ideas. If not, still works great. Very happy you've made Stickies Tom. I don't' say that about many programs.

How doesn't it work please? Do you get to see it until you restart Stickies .. or perhaps you're setting it on a note by note basis?

Are you looking for some notes to have the skin and others not to, and for that to persist when you sync?

I have put the skins file in multiple locations.
it seems to remember where they are located.
however, when I sync, (such as with dropbox) the entire database, or sticky folder got synced. and somehow the location of the skin got lost. That is, stickies no longer looked at the location showing in the appearance, skins location, and just went to the default skin. not sure how to explain it.
any ideas?

also, all stickys have the same skin.

I saw in another thread that it's not possible for two computes on the same network to use the same data files simultaneously, but it appears from this thread that it may be possible to use a file sharing/syncing program such as Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. as an alternative.

But when I've tried it seems that the database gets corrupted in some manner.

Can multiple computers use the same database through a file sharing site and all be running Stickies simultaneously? Or will it only work when Stickies is running on one system at time - and Stickies needs to be closed on that system before it's opened on another system?

Is there any way that a single database can be networked in some manner for use on multiple systems simultaneously, or is that just not possible at this point?

Thanks for any assistance!

It works OK just so long as only one copy/side of the dropbox is running Stickies at once. Stickies assumes it's the only process accessing its data files, so by DB syncing with something else changing them, that can go wrong, and you'll end up with both "Orphan check" errors at startup, and worse, data loss if you store stickies on both sides at once.

So although the DB method will work so long as you're disciplined, it's safer probably to run the app from a pen drive as a portable app, although then your data is only in one place.

The API hooks exist in Stickies for a full sync solution, but no-one, myself included, has ever written code which will help it do what you mention.
