xx IP Address Keeps Changing
« Thread started on: Aug 2nd, 2014, 01:22am »

Hi again.
I would like to know why my sister's IP Address keeps changing on her desktop PC. I will send her a stickie note and she will receive it. Then suddenly her IP changes again and I can't send her a stickies, until I go in and change it to the 'new' number. This is the 'main' PC in the house and she never shuts it down, so I can't figure what to do about this. My IP address on my laptop will change occasionally too, but not like hers. Hers seems to change every other day. It is making me nuts to always go in and get the new IP address.
huhIs there something I can do?
It is @ times like this... I really really wish I was a Geek! grin

Probably because her machine is set to use DHCP "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol". Taking a wild guess, when the machines on your network start up, they broadcast looking for network information, and your router gives that to them.

If you can get to the admin pages on your router, look for the DHCP settings, and see whether you can increase the lease time. That's most directly the answer to your question.

If you have trouble with this though, and you only need to change this setting for Stickies, try using host names instead of IP addresses to send to each other. The names won't change, although the numbers might.

(as a third option, change her desktop to use a static IP address rather than DHCP ... but that might have other implications, so don't do that as your first thing!)

What you could do too is, try to find out the NetBIOS name of your sister's computer. Normally it should be just her computer name.
If you are using a FritzBox as Router it could be that the address would be something like <Computer's Name>.fritz.box as fully qualified address.

If you know the Computer's Name, but you don't have the fully qualified address, try "nslookup <Computer's Name>" in the windows command prompt. It should return the full adress.

Just try to use this as receiver's address. For me it worked. Hope that helps you out if you don't want to change any router settings or use static IP adresses.

Greetings

EDIT: Maybe a bit late for this reply, but still could be useful for someone smiley
