angry Windows Server 2008 vs. Stickies Server
« Thread started on: Oct 29th, 2012, 4:06pm »

Hi

I'm a long-time Stickies user, and a die-hard fan of this app.
A time ago, i've been involved together with other users, in the spanish translation DLL.

I was using Stickies with a simple schema : Stickies Server running over a Windows 200 Server to provide friend list to my network, each machine with a static IP.

Populating new friends was done on any client machine, simply via CTRL+SHIFT+Y; no problems so far. When a new sync was requested, using the web interface with IE 8 worked like a charm too.

Times change, and recently we replaced the old server with new ones, in this case, Windows Server 2008, giving DHCP to all workstations. The OS on the new terminals is now Windows 7; whereas in the old ones was Win XP SP3.

Having done installation of Stickies on the client machines (Win 7) with no trouble, and with Stickies Server installed on Win Server 2008 (let's name it "Server1") with no trouble. GPO also does correctly, to enforce all clients to use DNS and set networking on. Recalling web interface from the server worked OK too, so next step was populating friend list.
Then, problems arise :

1 - When i tried, on any client machine, to populate friend list using CTRL+Shift+Y, it simply does not work, giving an error message ("Could not connect to Server1")
2 - Web interface from any client machine failed to connect.

I've PINGed my server from the clients machines, no packet loss.
I've checked the Firewalls, every port belonging to the server or the app are open; so i suppose there's no networking problems.

żis for any reason something that prevents Stickies Server from working on this enviroment?

Thanks in advance

My first thought was that perhaps there's another firewall, perhaps bundled with some security software, which is also running? That's not so likely though.

Then I thought about an addressing issue, but if you can ping the server by name, that's not going to be it either.

Then I remembered a note I have on my screen already to check how Stickies can sometimes interact with IPv6. I suspect it's enabled on this server. Can you disable it (temporarily) and then try Stickies again? From what I've seen, some machines with IPv6 running have networking trouble .. but only some.

Let me know...

Hi Tom

As you pointed, after disabling IPv6 on the server, the web interface finally granted access. The CTRL+Shift+Y combination also does work.
After that, i double checked some things, firewall, anti virus software and delete old instalations of stickies server and GPO's, doing everything from scratch.
One thing that makes me wonder is the fact that at first, the only way to establish communication between server and client, was to tell the client to retrieve data from the server putting the IP of it, instead of the machine (192.168.10.1 instead of server1).
After that, changing IP and putting the machine name, it seems to continue working flawlessly.

Now, i'm populating the server, i've tried to send and reply stickies between machines and seems to work fine. Today i'm going to put GPO on the server, and i'll let you know what happens.

Regards
