xx ToolBar Blue skin
« Thread started on: Aug 25th, 2016, 11:41am »

ToolBar Blue is finished. To operate as intended, the skin needs at least Stickies v9.0c.

Please report any errors you may see!

ToolBar Blue has been submitted for publishing at Zhorn Software.

Below are the designer notes and images which convey a few details about ToolBar Blue.

Here's a snapshot of the note with the wraparound edit bar turned on (via the on/off diamond button in the upper left corner). The edit buttons space out when resizing the skin. This was done by placing the buttons with respect to the top and left side using percentages. (Thanks to Tom Revell for showing me how to make that happen.) The creation date near the bottom can always be toggled on and off via an invisible switch overlaying the center of the date's location.

Designer Notes

To draw correctly ToolBar Blue requires Stickies v9.0c or later.

This skin was inspired by Leopoldus at the forum and the new blues seen in Manage stickies of Stickies 9. Thanks to Tom Revell for his help on this skin.

Created using Tom Revell's Stickies Skin Designer v.4.00. Elements of this skin were created using Paint.net, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Paint, and Material Design icons at materialdesignicons.com.

Invisible things: Overlaying the creation date at the bottom is an invisible toggle to turn the date on or off.

The rolled note has two personalities -- 1) normal rolled note with a title, and 2) rolled toolbar. On the left side of the rolled skin is a switch which turns the rolled note into a toolbar; you might want to stick the toolbar somewhere on your screen. The rolled toolbar contains some of Stickies' tools which are often independent of the sticky note being used.

This skin also makes a fine picture frame, and so as not to spoil it for this purpose, no buttons show in image mode; an invisible roll up button exists in the upper right corner of image stickies.

I wish you enjoyment of this skin and hope you find it useful.

Impressive ! A real clear design. The No_Buttons on image style makes it very nice.

A lot of work must have gone into it ( not only for getting holes in the scrollbar....)

I only could not get the toggle ontop to work ,the button disappears and it seems you can only use ctrl+t to get it back.

The scrollbar does not go to the top (or bottom) that needs something to get used to as i expect more text when there is none smiley The icons are nice only the one for Select All is confusing or maybe i am not familiar with it.

I will certainly use the toolbar mode but change the "exit" to another command like "open manage" that would be more usefull for me.

Thank you for sharing smiley

btw Tom Revell should update his website info! Thank you for exposing this in a subtile way......... tongue

Hi Snowflake! Thank you for all of your input.

Glad you like the image mode design.

Actually...it's the hardest skin I've ever put together. "holes in the scrollbar" huh...not sure what you mean. OK, I'm guessing you'd prefer not having the gaps around the thumb of the scrollbar at the top and bottom. (As I recall, Tom pointed this out long ago and I never fixed it.) I've changed it (no more gaps), and I hope you like it better now....I do like that better.

The "select all" button is similar to the one Tom chose to use for select all in the right-click menu. It's not an easy concept to convey in a symbol. Can you find a better one?

Thanks, I believe I've corrected the on top button. I've tested it in every conceivable mode and it's working here. Please let me know if you still see it not working.

No need to change "exit" to "open manage". "Open manage" is in the leftmost group of the toolbar, the folders icon, next to options.

And how did you guess my hidden agenda to expose Tom's outdated website info? smiley

Looks like no small bug to me.

Try downloading Stickies v9.0c. ToolBar Blue will not operate as intended unless at least Stickies v9.0c is running.

OK, I think I figured it out.
You must run the corrected version of Stickies 9b.
If you don't run the corrected version, then the buttons along the left will not work as intended.
A link to download it and directions are given in my first post.

Sorry) It's my bad! I used app downloaded from main site) In fixed version all working fine! Thnx!

This is really MY bad of course for writing in the bug, sorry.

I need to get v9.0b out - hopefully this weekend. It's a three day weekend here in the UK, so I've no (good) excuse for not getting it done smiley

I still have problems with the ontop condition,i change some settings and this seems to work for me but i can have made unintentionally side effects....

https://www.dropbox.com/s/znzk567t3yycfgq/test.ssk?dl=1

I added a "not on top" on the png at 344 , 144

I referred to your post "http://tomrevell.conforums.com/index.cgi?board=skinning&action=display&num=1469219481" it seemed you wanted "holes" in the scrollbar thumb to have the background shine through, when i tested the toolbarblue it had a white background and i thought it was a "hole" not realising it was just a white banding.... in the scrollbar thumb smiley

Yes i missed the "Open Manage" icon i thought i tried them all....

Ha hidden agenda ...just some unobtrusive sentences akin to visual whispering ( about v9 default skin...) maybe?

Greetings,

Well, good. You've provided a version of the skin with an actual on-top button, and some people (maybe most!) will prefer that. You see, in my version of the skin, an on-top button does not exist unless the condition, "on top", is true. So...in my version of the skin, if the on-top condition is true, then an indicator will show as well as a button which you can click to make it "not on top". Perhaps you were expecting an invisible on-top button even when the condition is false, but there isn't one. When no indicators are showing, the only two buttons I included are shown with the white diamonds in the upper corners.

About that hidden agenda...no visual whispering here. smiley When I want to display a text sticky here in the forum, I usually grab some text from Zhorn Software; it's convenient and I feel confident that Tom won't mind his website text showing up in an image here at the forum.

Thanks for this exceptional skin!

One thing that puzzles me is the vertical toolbar. In order to see the whole toolbar, I must increase the size of the sticky by typing in it or using multiple carriage returns. This seems odd to me. Here's why:

Say I want to bold the second word on the first line. I can't do that using the vertical toolbar "Bold" button without adding at least 11 lines to the sticky (font size dependent). I realize I could use a keyboard shortcut, but wanted to get clarity on this.

In addition, how can I turn the toolbar buttons on by default?

Thanks again for your wonderful work!

Oh, good! I know the answer to this one.

Right-click the title bar of the skin and put a check mark beside "Scrollbar". Now you'll be able to easily resize the skin. Using the double arrows mouse pointer along the borders of the skin, hold a left-mouse click and drag to change the size of the skin. All of my text stickies have their scrollbars enabled. If you want all of your future stickies to have scrollbars by default, in the right column of the General tab of Options, place a check mark beside "New stickies have scrollbars." Voila.

You ask how to turn the toolbar buttons on by default. I'm assuming that you're referring to the rolled toolbar with the eighteen buttons? I decided to make "normal rolled mode" which shows the title of the sticky to be the default. That made more sense to me because who would really want that toolbar as a sticky note which actually has content. The toolbar doesn't even show a title. I mean...I could whip up a special version just for you that makes the toolbar show when you roll up the note...if that's what you want. smiley

Oh...and thanks again for your nice comments earlier on which stayed with me as I worked on this skin.

How about that, just for once I've met the self-imposed deadline and released v9.0c today. There's a new Skinner as well. Both app raise the version of the skin language they write/read to help people not see problems if they use your skin, Cynthia, which includes the fixes.

You know...you could have actually taken that (bank holiday?) and had a real holiday, headed out into the beautiful UK countryside with your camera or something else fun.

Anyway...you didn't and now we have 9c and...
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. smiley Judging by the release dates of the versions of 8, i'd convinced myself that we wouldn't see another correction for months!

Again, THANK YOU! smiley

Very soon I'll email a couple of skins ready to be published.

Wow - these skin is amazing - adds tons of functionality that can be hidden or shown as needed. Awesome work!

One (actually two) question though - is there reason for only showing the on-top toggle when it is on? Would you be able to give some guidelines to change the code to showing the toggle at all times (I tried but I don't understand the API well enough to figure out why my changes aren't working). Secondly, using the right diamond for rollup/unroll - doesn't dbl clicking on the top bar do that and now there is no stickieclose button?

Glad you like it. smiley

It was a rush job, so please let me know if you find errors and/or want other changes. There's now an on-top button which will show in both unrolled and normal rolled mode. The upper right diamond is now a close button in both unrolled and normal rolled mode. I made no changes to the rolled tool bar....because the tool bar already has on-top and close buttons.

Here's a link to the modified skin.
