xx can't recover old stiockies after windows 8 refres
« Thread started on: Feb 26th, 2016, 10:04am »

I have had this problem before and don't remember how to solve it. I had to refresh my Windows 8 PC which means most apps were deleted including Stickies--but the stickies themselves were saved in a separate 'document' file. After the refresh I re-downloaded, installed, and ran Stickies 8.0c. None of the old stickies will open and I am desperate. Please help. huh

Also, even if I create a new stickies note, it will not open even when the 'open with' shows stickies program.

What's a "document" file please?

Stickies has a export and import feature which would be the best way to handle refreshing your PC, but it's too late for that now I suppose.

What sort of refresh was it? Do you have access to the data which used to be on your system?

1. By a document file I mean a folder like one where you save .docs or .jpgs. To save stickies I have created on my desktop I right click on the title and do 'Save as' and save to a stickies folder. For example, my current folder is named stickies 2016 (duh) but I have others named stickies 2015, etc., dating back to 2012--very useful for finding old phone numbers or pswrds. For the individual stickies from the desktop where they are posted (like an address book) I do 'save as' from the 'Title' and save them in the relevant folder. Properties for these separate folders are: .sti files.

2. Refresh: Windows 8 and up has a new thing which is great, called Refresh, which is like Reformat but you don't have to make separate backups on a USB and you don't lose any documents, photos, etc. during the procedure. HOWEVER, you do lose some apps you have installed yourself (although in a recap you are provided with a list of the apps lost). It works great. One app lost, however, is Stickies (NOT the stickies themselves that I have created, which are safe in the .sti folder, but the app itself). And my problem is that when the refresh is done and I re-download the stickies app (8.0c or whichever), it does not communicate with the old stickies in the document folder and will not open them.

I do in fact have all the old files that used to be in my system back to 2013) before I did this Refresh'; they are stored in a 'document' folder and I was able to copy them to my Sony Vaio laptop from my Western Digital Passport memory block); I also downloaded a new stickies.exe (app) to the Vaio from before this new refresh.

On the Sony Vaio all works fine. But on my HP Compaq (Windows 8, Chrome always), after this refresh I can transfer the stickies folders to Documents, I can download stickies 8.0c, but I cannot open the stickies in the stickies folders, no way. Please help, as my phone #s and pswrds (my life, in effect) are on your wonderful stickies.

I hope this is clear. Let me know if you need more. I pray you can help and not be too techie as I am just a regular person. Thanks

Sorry for jumping in on Tom's response but i guess it is urgent so to get an sti file to open you have to mark the setting in the "Options" traymenu setting.

Maybe this "mark" is missing on your new installation.

Thanks for your prompt repl;y. However, I have tried your solution. It was already checked in 'Advanced", so I tried unchecking it and then rechecking it, but I get a message about an error in the registry. Al;so when I open the folder with the stickies files, and I try "Open with" I see the yellow stickies next to the file name, but it will not open with it. Any suggestions?

If you uncheck it and then try to open a sti file does it still shows a sticky icon?(it shouldn't...).You can try a reboot who knows if it solves it smiley

This should be simple and because it clearly isn't i guess you have to wait for a response from Tom.

Did you install the same version of stickies as before? You can see the version in the traymenu "About...."

If you need urgent info contained in an sti file you can open it in notepad ( in the "Open" dialog select "All Files" at the bottom otherwise it filters/shows only text files )because it is a text file.At the end you will find the sticky text after all the formatting information.
If it is not so urgent best wait for Tom's response.

Best regards,

Same version of stickies as before. Now there are three (tried deleting them, they won't delete, they keep reinstalling.) Any urgent info I needed I took from the backup folder which I opened on my laptop, copied all the info making one document of it, and transferred that to the desktop on my PC. Will see if I can tackle the registry problem tomorrow--I know nothing about registries. Thanks for your efforts. Hopefully Tom will have som einput for me.

When I go to Options>Advanced and try to uncheck the "Associate the .sti and .ssk box" do I can perhaps redo it, I get '"This will edit...Do you wish to continue?"

If I click '"Yes" I get "An error occurred while modifying your registry".

Tom or someone else to provide insight?

You could try to manual associate .sti with stickies. The screenshot is from win10 but here is a link to win8 instructions.

In the "change program" you find an option (if you continue long enough through the standard programs) to browse for a
program/App.

You can find the location of your installed stickies.exe in the traymenu "About..." Paths : App (not Data!)

It is possible that you do not have the permission to change registry ,you could set your account as administrator.( on my system this is not necessary ..)

I solved this. Don't know quite how. That is, I went to the Start menu in lower left corner. On the Start menu two stickies boxes (icons) came up. I went to the first one and with right side of mouse went to Options on, then tried Associate .sti but no go, so I just completely deleted that box. Then I went to the second Stickies box on the Start menu, did likewise, and was able to uncheck the Associate .sti checkbox and the recheck it, with no error message. Went back to regular desktop, opened the stickies folder, and voilą, everything is now opening.

Thanks a million for your solidarity in this difficult time. I hope never to ave to repeat this.

BTW, on the left side of the Associate programs screen you sent me, where all file types (.sti, etc.) are shown, there was no sign of .sti; nor was Stickies listed in the Default choices given of programs or apps. Go figure.
