Running Stickies v 7.1a on an HP Envy notebook using Windows 7.

I must have clicked some key or another because I can no longer use my mouse to scroll through a Stickies note. I could before....NEVER ANY problem with this glorious software which has (along with UK's calendar) become my right arm.

I miss being able to scroll though my notes! undecided I can use the arrow keys but they won't go below the end of the note showing on my computer screen.

Can someone please help? I'd really appreciate it Thanks so much

Try checking the box for "new stickies have scrollbars" in the General tab of Options; perhaps you accidentally unchecked it.

To enable the scrollbar in a particular sticky, right-click the title bar and select scrollbar.

Perhaps a simple restart, of either Stickies or your machine will solve it?

If you create an image sticky (new sticky, then control-shift-k), select the pen tool (press p) then does the mouse wheel change the pen cursor? That's a test for whether your mouse wheel events are reaching Stickies at all.

Sorry I don't know how to reply to both of you individually:

CYNTHIA - In my version of Stickies (7.1.a) I have the "enable scrollbars" checked off in General tab of Options. When I right-click on a Stickie titlebar I don't have an option to select scrollbar.

TOM - Yes, if I create a new image Stickie, the mouse changes to a pen and I can scribble all over the Stickie just like a pencil.

Right, the right-click option for scroll bar wasn’t available in v7.1a. I wonder whether upgrading to the current version of Stickies might fix the problem. So the scroll bar does not work in any of your notes. How odd. Could it be skin related, I wonder. Perhaps you could email Tom your options.ini file; it’s available in your Stickies data file.

Yes, I think it's Stickies related.

Now I think I have inadvertently set this as the default style since new notes don't allow scrolling either! ugh.

Also, interestly, my mouse will no longer scroll on any Stickies note on my desktop...which I have IDed as a "friend" so I could sent updated notes from my laptop to my desktop.

I've thought of downloading a newer version. Is there a way I can save all my notes and have them available in the newer version. Is there a data file for notes?

I've searched for an options.ini file....doesn't come up. I do have a stickies.ini file in My Documents folder. Is that the one I could send Tom?

So, are you using the same skin for all your notes? What’s the name of the skin you’re using please? And about how many notes do you have?

Here’s the deal. I was an infant when v7.1a was around. An infant with regard to Stickies that is. I don’t have any vivid memories of that version. Before installing the latest version, I would take a backup. If you click the tray icon, do you see backup? Then I would consult with Tom, here at the forum or by email, before installing v9.0d. And yes, if all goes smoothly, your current notes should be there after the installation is complete. If all doesn’t go smoothly, rescue missions are possible as long as you backed up your data before installing.

To access Stickies data file, click the tray icon and choose “About Stickies”. A box will open showing information about Stickies. A clickable link to the Stickies data file is found at the bottom. Click that link; you’ll know you’re in the data file if you see, among other things, options.ini. You could copy that file and send it to Tom.

When I click on the link it takes me to <user name> App Data>Roaming>stickes where I have a "stickies.ini" file ...no "options.ini". Is this the file I should send?

After clicking on "About Stickies" it says Name Skin v6.5a (don't know why or if it's supposed to match v7.1a that I'm using.)

I probably have 6-8 Stickies notes on each machine...laptop and desktop. They go back and forth between machines as they are modified/updated.

Also I was thinking.....what about recovering the .ini file (is that the one where all info is stored?) from a backup? If I restore a backup file, wouldn't the "old" format be restored? (Yes, I know I would get old note(s)....but I could probably rebuild them since my last back up was just a day or so ago.

No options.ini in the data file. OK, I don't know why. Perhaps that was created in a later version of Stickies. Options are a part of stickies.ini.

Only 6-8 notes per machine. So few notes? How great. Here's what I would do - upgrade. First take a backup. I'd also copy all of the stickies data I want preserved into Window 7's WordPad or whatever note pad you have on board. Save that for later in case you lose data when upgrading to Stickies v9.0d. Then just upgrade. Be sure to EXIT Stickies before you upgrade. You'll find the current Stickies download here - http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/stickies/download.html

Be prepared for the new look, stacks if you want to try those, a brand new Manage Stickies, and a lot more.

If you absolutely detest the new Stickies, you could write to Tom telling him all about it, and he'd probably send you a download link to a previous version you might like better.

Just ... save your data while you're tinkering around. Good luck! And please let us know how it all turns out.

Thanks so much for these links. I am definitely going to make a note of them....and thanks for the backup link....serves as a good reminder. I should do it as soon as I log out! smiley

Solved the problem by restoring a file from my hard drive backup so I am, once again, a scrolling fool.....and a very happy one at that. smiley

As an influential member you could ask Tom to make the Knowledge base more prominent.
I always seen it as the wallflower of this website.....

Maybe a flickering banner like some shady casinos with "Troubleshooting" in neon letters would be nice wink

You are influential. You could make specific suggestions under feature requests. I agree. The Knowledgebase has a long reputation as a wallflower, probably helped by its banner link of blue letters on blue background. Perhaps dispensing with the term Knowledgebase and replacing it with Troublshooting might also be helpful.

Huh, yes, blue-on-blue isn't useful. I've changed at least that now.

I thought about trying to find a few images to sprinkle into the headers here to draw attention, but I don't know what I'd use for the web site itself. I've pulled the KB search HTML code over though as you can see - maybe that will cause an uptick in the amount of searches I see performed - or instead it will mean more scripts trying to hack it smiley

I think it was v8 for which I pulled options into their own ini file, all to reduce the amount of disk activity which Stickies performs. No need to re-write all the options every time you alter a title, and it also means it's simpler for people to share options with me without including all their data in the event of trouble.

You’ve been listening. The changes are very pretty. Dark blue and black on white is real nice. Would you consider “Knowledge Base” instead? Here is another suggestion. If possible, put the magnifier and “Search” somewhere else at the top, and perhaps change “Search” to “Search the forum”. I believe these changes will encourage more people to dig in and help themselves before posting questions previously asked on multiple occasions.

Sadly I don't have access to alter the contents of the top two rectangles - although I can put any HTML I like in what's now the white box, that's as far as that goes.

There's control over some of the colours for the rest of the forum as well, which is why they've altered over time, most recently so that links go blue, which is "normal".

Personally i would never had clicked "Knowledge Base" if not a user had pointed me to a link and wondered if there were more links as they are numbered.

Is there no "knowledge base" on the stickies website ? A list without a search would also be nice , i always find some topics of interest when i see the list ( search with empty field )

See the "support" link in upper right-hand corner of Zhorn Software. It brings up the KB search box and a list of the software at Zhorn which have articles in the KB.
