Make Title Visible When Rolled Up?
Post by Stratos on Sep 8th, 2017, 4:12pm

Love this app! Just got it yesterday and I'm still getting familiar with it.

I am looking to keep the all titles visible when stickies are rolled up. Is there a way to easily do this? I am using the Win10 Skin, so maybe this isn't supported with it?

I'd actually like for titles to be visible at all times, or at least have the option to toggle this on a sticky-by-sticky basis.

So I dove into the Skinner and think I have the basics down, but I'm having difficulty editing the Win10 theme to give me the always visible title. I learned about placing where my option buttons are, but they do not change color like the original theme. Is there some extra programming magic I need to get the colors to change?

I tried out that skin a long time ago, but I never noticed that the title vanishes when sticky loses focus, even when the sticky is rolled up.

If you have the basics of the Skinner down, then you're able to open a skin inside Skinner. Hopefully? If so, find the two text elements for the title. Text elements have a "TX" symbol in the list of elements. One at at time open the title elements and simply remove the check from the box beside "Only draw when skin has focus". After saving your modified skin, export it to ssk, put it into your stickies directory and try it out. After removing those check marks, the title should always show up.

I also removed the focus condition from all of the buttons on the title bar - new sticky, style select, and delete (or close) - and I like the skin much better now.

Is there a special way to open an already existing skin? I open the Win10 skin, make the change, and then save the changes and export to ssk, but when I try to apply the skin it gives me an error in the options preview.

I notice the source png is black when I open Skinner. Am I not using the png correctly?

Here's the way I operated to make the changes in the Win10 skin. Perhaps the way I did it will work for you.

1. Place both files, unzipped from the Win10 ssk, on the desktop -- the configuration settings INI file and the PNG file both named Win10StickyNoteStyle. For me it works best if no other files associated with the skin, except these two, are found on my desktop, and it's important that the PNG sits on the desktop with the INI.
2. Inside Skinner open the configuration settings INI file from the location of your desktop. After opening Win10StickyNoteStyle.ini inside Skinner, you should see the PNG preview over to the right. (If you only see a black square, then the PNG is probably not on the desktop where it needs to be.)
3. Make the editing changes desired, then save the file to the desktop via the file menu; after saving, choose via the file menu "export to ssk".
4. Apply the modified ssk skin, Win10StickyNoteStyle.ssk to a sticky to see if the changes are acceptable.

Anyway, try to do everything on the desktop. It works. When you're totally satisfied, you can put the modified ssk in your Stickies directory.

Okay, I figured out how to export from the ssk, but I get a png and a .not file, is this supposed to be the ini?

If you right-click a file and choose properties, you'll see the type of file. You should have a PNG image file and a "configuration settings" file or a .ini file. Once these two files are on the desktop, follow the directions, and voila, you'll have your modified skin.

===================
To access the two files needed, you need to take the skin apart. I don't see directions in the Skinner tutorial for taking a skin apart. It's real easy. Take the ssk skin Win10StickyNotesStyle.ssk (the one you downloaded from Zhorn Software at the link http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/stickies/skins/showone.pl?d=win10stickynotesstyle) and rename the file, removing the extension ssk and replacing it with the extension zip. You will get a warning, but yes, you are sure you want to change it. You'll instantly see the ssk file replaced by a zip file. Extract the contents; you'll see the INI and PNG files inside. Then follow the directions I gave to create your modified skin.

ETA - 2 minutes. It's real easy.

OK, I did a little detective work. The creator of the Win10 Sticky Notes Style skin, Cone, modeled the skin after the sticky notes program included with Microsoft's Windows 10. I don't have Windows 10 running on a machine in my house, but as far as I can tell after watching a YouTube video, the Windows 10 sticky notes do not roll up. Cone's original skin mimics the style of those notes. Cone introduced the skin at the forum last fall in this post -

In that thread, someone requested a rolled note with a visible title and buttons, and Cone provided this link to download it -
https://www.dropbox.com/s/v5ac22cjhr2wjwj/Win10StickyNotesStyle_v1.2.ssk?dl=0

So it has already been done, a version of the skin with a title and buttons that are always visible. Thanks to Cone for providing the modified skin.

Fantastic! Thank you for your research into this!

This one will help a lot, but I appreciate the guidance on making skins. I'm sure to make a few custom ones in the future.
