xx Error when starting stickies
« Thread started on: Oct 13th, 2017, 08:59am »

Hi all,

I am getting an error every time stickies starts up which is preventing me from using it...

I can see the notes in the background but am unable to interact with them. This is the dialog box...
------------------------------------
Stickies v9.0d
The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file 'C:\Users\Glynn\Dropbox\Stickies Data\store.mdb'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data.
------------------------------------

It was working fine, and I had this pop up when running Stickies 9.0c. I have upgraded to 9.0d and it still isn't working. The store file sits in my DropBox folder (for backup purposes) and it has worked fine previously.

I did have two instances running in task manager so I have removed the shortcut from the start-up folder and added it back and its now only showing it once in task manager.

This seems to have happened since I had my PC in sleep mode... which is something I don't usually do.

Any ideas? it's driving me NUTS! tongue

With Stickies not running, are you able to rename or move that file?

Perhaps the file really is in use by something...?

If so, you might be able to use Process Hacker to work out what process has it locked?

If not ... well come back here and we'll have another think I guess smiley

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the reply!

I can rename the store.mdb file. Weirdly, if I rename it to store1.mdb, I get exactly the same message that the store.mdb file is in use (not the store1.mbd file).
I've definitely renamed the file in the correct location too.

I've got Process Hacker installed (although its alien to me). stickies.exe appears twice in the Processes list (in grey band). I am unable to terminate either instance. PIDs are: 15560 15704.

Hope that helps smiley
Thanks,
Glynn

PH is a fine tool, but it does need a bit of knowledge to know what everything it shows you means! The PIDs are unique per process per machine, and will change all the time. If you closed Stickies and reopened it, you'd get a new PID.

Two stickies.exe instances? Is there another user working on that machine at the same time? If you double-click the line, you can see the user (on the Token tab).

If some other Stickies instance was locking the file that would explain it, although it would need to be running as another user really.

To determine which process has a file locked, press Control-F in PH and type the name of the file which is locked.
