xx Suggestion about USB drives and identifying letter
« Thread started on: Jun 24th, 2013, 6:24pm »

I'm a regular user of bart and first of all I need to say thanks for it smiley it has helped me a lot.

Since I deal a lot with users, I have to help them to have a copy of their files and bart hasn't failed. The problem is the issue with the letter changing when is a USB drive.

Luckily, I found a smart and simple way to know which drive is the one that you need.

Every usb drive has a unique hex volume number and with that you can validate.

Here's a little batch code (not mine, found it on internet):

@echo off
set SN=1382355563
set "extDrive="
for /f %%D in ('wmic volume get driveLetter^, serialNumber ^| find "%SN%"') do set extDrive=%%D

It compares the volume number in decimal format (SN variable) with the wmic information and the drive letter, then assign the letter to the "extDrive" variable. Simple but effective and then you can just launch bart with:

bart -letter:%extDrive%

Could be this included in Bart natively so it helps others?

Again thanks and if helps others good smiley!

That's one smart solution you have there!

So seeing as I don't know exactly how you're working, I guess the idea of putting bart.exe on the drive itself, and using -letter:. doesn't work for you?
