« Thread started on: Jul 22nd, 2010, 3:36pm »

Version one point zero zero of 'Scoop' has been released over on the web site - click here to go take a look:

http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/stickies/tools.html#scoop

It's a plug-in to Stickies which adds categories to the app. This is something which is quite frequently requested, so hopefully some of you might find it useful.

The app allows you to assign desktop stickies to one or more categories, and then perform actions on all stickies in a category at once.

Go take a look, and let me know what you think!

Hi Tom

I have just being using Scoop and it looks a great addition.

Not sure if I have this right but it appears to run as a separate programme which you can only minimise to the taskbar. As it is not something you would need running all the time it means that you would be opening and closing it when required.

Therefore is it possible to be able to launch/close it from within Stickies?

I have two suggestion as to possible options:
1. That the commands could be added within Skinner so that they are actions that can be applied to a button.
2. That the options be added to the Stickies task tray icon right-click menu.

I know that so of this could be achieved with a shortcut key to the exe file but the above option if not to difficult to do would be great.

Thanks again.

Hi,

Thanks for the ideas. I've started small with Scoop to see how it goes. If it's popular, I might well add it into the main app at some point in the future - there's no point in stuffing every idea I have into Stickies. Had I put Stickypics for example into the app, that really would have been a bit silly...

I'm developing Scoop still at the moment, and what you suggest would work a lot easier were the app to be integrated.

Thanks for the suggestions,

Tom

Hi Tom

I have been playing with Sccop and below are some of my initial thoughts.

I have come up with a work around for starting Scoop. By creating an AHK routine which runs the exe file or if Scoop is running closes it, all from the same shortcut. Hopefully there will be enough interest in Scoop to add it to main application.

My other thought that it would be good to have a master list of categories that you would always have available. However as the category list is only made up of those stickies that are on the desktop this causes a problem. So that if you Close/Attach/Sleep/Recurring a stickie and it is currently the only stickie in that category then the category disappears from the list.

After a bit of thought I have come up with a way to achieve what I want. As each stickie can be allocated to more than one category my idea was to creat a master stickie and then creat all the categories I require against that one stickie. As this stickie will not be used for anything other than the allocation of categories I did not want it see it on the desktop. I achieved this by hiding the stickie using Manage stickies. Now I have a list which I can amend and add to as I want.

This solution is not perfect as the use of the categories in Scoop seems to work on hiding or not the stickie depending on what you have selected within Scoop this means that the hide function of my master stickie changes when I use Scoop which is a bit of a pain. Is it not possible that Scoop could see stickies that are elsewhere i.e. stored I could then park the stickie there or is there a possibility that within “Manage” that the categories could be defined.

Also mentioning stored stickies it is worth noting that you already have the ability to create category here which is obviously something different from Scoop. It might be better to avoid confusion if perhaps this was renamed as new Stored Folder.

Finally on the workings of predefined “Smart” categories. I can see how you are activating the various stickies relating to a category by hiding them or not.

1. It would be good if the double click option under “Scoop Options” had the facility for “solo” selection as this would appear to be the most logical selection in that you double click on a category and you then see only those stickies in that category and if it could toggle to show all again would be good.

2. As to using the right click in Scoop when on a category it appears to do everything you want but is not really very easy to understand. I am not sure if I have got this right but "Solo" shows only those stickies that match category, which is fine. If you stay on the same category and click "Show" nothing happens as it is already showing from the "Solo" command. It appears that the "Solo" and "Show" commands are duplicated, is that right? I know that if you change the category to All and then click "Solo" or "Show" that you then get all the stickies. What was the reason for having the two. It might be better if the "Show" command was "Show all" and then you could toggle between the stickies in the category and all stickies.

3. Again not sure if I have this right but the two “Smart Categories” “Hidden” and “Showing” appear to work oddly. If you are looking at all the desktop stickies (i.e. none are hidden) and you then right click and click “Show” nothing happens as you would expect as they are all showing and if a stickie is hidden it remains hidden. If you then click on “Solo” all the stickies are then hidden. I would have expected nothing to happen again.

3a If you then move on to the “Hidden” category this works slightly differently if you click “Show” all the stickies are shown including those that were previous hidden I would have expected to only see those that were hidden previously. When you click the “Solo” command it makes all the stickies hidden regardless of their previous state. I would have again thought you would have only seen those that we hidden.

3b. As a foot note to this hide or not it might be good if these options as well as ghosting could be added to the individual stickie right click menu rather than through “manage”.

4. The “Go Away” command is slightly confusing in that what it does is put the stickies to sleep, might be better if this was actually called “Sleep”.

5. “Clear Category” might be good if this had a confirmation that is what you want to do as it is fairly powerful in it removes all mention of all categories. This includes obviously all the categories in my master stickie. It might be better rather than a “clear all” categories if it only it only worked on user defined categories and only on the one highlighted. If you must have a “clear all” perhaps it would be better to keep it under Scoop’s menu next to refresh say rather than on the right click.

6. Is it not possible to capitalise the first letter of a user define category, looks untidy without this.

7. With regard to adding categories it would be good if you could add a category to a multiple of stickies. Not thought about how best to do this but if you could select the stickies within “manage” stickies and then on the right click there was the category option as per individual stickie.

Hope this is useful and not too long.

If I could get myself in gear, then you'd already be using a number of the things you're looking for smiley

I've been corresponding with another Scoop fan about how to improve the app, and the next 'release' will be able to do a lot of what you're looking for, I think.

In it, the "smart category" concept has been expanded, so that you can define your own criteria. You can have as many categories as you like, and can, for example, have one which matches all yellow stickies which are on-top, and another which matches all white stickies, which are rolled up, and contain the word "spain". You can also name them with the correct capitalisation, and include spaces.

Once I'd added that, the existing setting of a category becomes actually quite irrelevant, as you just need to include a word on a note to have it fit a category.

"Solo" means "show all the notes which match, and hide everything else", so the behaviour you describe makes sense. "Show" of course acts on those it matches, and does nothing to those it does not match.

Perhaps I could rename "category" to "tag"?

You're right about "Go Away" - it's how I've always remembered the control-G keyboard shortcut, but it's not referred to as that within Stickies is it.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll get to the next release as soon as I get five minutes (been busy on v7.1a beta tonight!)

I like the idea of a text based "tag" to get smart categories so it would be very easy to add a sticky to some subset. It has some drawbacks that this tag is in the text when you use Ctrl-alt to select but i prefer it over submenu's searching.
