'On top' bug?
« Thread started on: Oct 1st, 2005, 08:18am »
Hi,
New user of Stickies 5.2a on WinXP Pro SP2 - it's gorgeous!!
Something baffles me though - I have 3 stickies on my desktop, with none of them being set to 'always on top'. Now say I am working within an app that has focus. I want to create a new sticky and double click the icon in the tray bar. This creates a new blank sticky in the middle of the screen, on top of the app window I have been working on (as intended).
BUT: as soon as I have double clicked the traybar icon to create my new sticky, I find all 3 stickies on my desktop also become 'on top' - they show up without being asked !!
I don't think this should happen? Am I missing anything obvious?
Thanks for a great product, Tom.

Hi Doxford,
I have been using stickies for a little while now (and am no expert on it by far) but I thought it was weird they all re-appeard when you created a new one too at first. I don't know if there's a way to set it up in the program so it doesn't do that by default....but I guess it assumes you want all your notes in front of you to review when you create a new one. But all you have to do is click once anywhere else on the screen after you type your new stickie & the ones that are not set as "always on top" will disappear and return to your desktop including your newest one unless you set that one as "always on top" I don't know if that helps at all.

Thanks for the reply, KKKmarie. At least I know now that it's not just happening on my computer!
Something else that I have noticed - whenever I boot up fresh or reboot, the cursor goes into the last sticky that I created on my desktop and starts blinking there. The cursor also lands into the last created intact sticky if you try to create a new sticky and then immediately delete it.
I find this unusual in the Win environment. I think that a sticky should not steal focus and get the cursor unless I explicitly ask it to?

My cursor goes to the last stickie also if you create one & delete it right away. I think the idea is that since you did click the stickies icon in the task bar - and it created one for you ....since you immediately deleted it - it is assuming you meant to add to an exisitng one instead of creating a new one. As far as the reboot - I haven't taken notice. I try not to reboot much because it takes forever to load everything. I'll try to take note next time.

Well, not sure if it 'needs' fixing but certainly good to have intended behaviour in any Windows app. For example, I have been using ATNotes before Stickies and these 'problems' were not there.
Surely if a car's windscreen wiper were to swish everytime the driver tooted the horn, no harm would be done - but it wouldn't be expected behaviour would it?
