John Smith - to get Bart to load a job file when you double-click one, modify your registry so that the way the app is called when the file is run.

(this is likely to be the same problem as with your batch file - put quotes around the job path if it has spaces in it)

Set the value to look like this:

Code:
"C:\Users\tom.revell\Documents\MyProjects\bart\Release\bart.exe" -file "%1"

You'll need to alter the path to bart.exe of course, but it's the -file bit which is what changes the behaviour.

Thank you so much, not only for the solution but explaining it so that I don't feel quite as dim as I should.

A very happy new year to you, I look forward to what Stickies and Bart have to offer in 2011.

At last, I have found how I can make the original problem appear or disappear at will. I am still using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and Bart v3.00 beta 2.

I have Office 2010 64 bit installed but for some while I needed to add a small part of Office 2007 32 bit to get functionality not in Office 2010. The need has recently gone away so I uninstalled Office 2007.

Immediately Bart failed to open and gave the "application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect" error message. I went back to an installation of Windows 7 that had no other software and thought I might start over from there. The first thing I used was Bart but I got the error message, (that was odd) so I didn't pursue that route.

Returning to the current set-up with Office 2010 64 bit but no longer Office 2007 32 bit, I installed Visual C++ Redistributable 2005, file name vcredist_x86.exe. Bart worked.

From earlier comments above I realised that Visual C++ Redistributable 2008 was not an update but a different program. I tested it anyway. As soon as the 2005 was uninstalled, Bart stopped working and would not work after 2008 was installed. This was to be expected but it seemed worth a test. Reversing the process, C++ Redistributable 2008 out and 2005 in and Bart was again OK.

It would appear that uninstalling Office 2007 took out some files that Bart needed.

Was Bart worth all this trouble? Definitely!

Thanks John for posting your findings - I've taken a note of them, and probably need to write up a KB article at some point.

Hello,

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and MS Office 2007 Professional 32-bit.

Nothing else installed, no Nero, no Visual Studio, no C++ runtimes, no VB runtimes, no nothing.

Bart version v3.00 beta 2 (Size: 208,896, Modified Saturday January 14 2012, 17:24:54).

Bart works OK, sometimes needs to be run as admin in order to copy certain special files, but other than that it works as expected.

Regards,
John

Ok, it's really time to publish Bart 3. I can't do it for a few days, but now I have a sticky on my screen to write the documentation (booooring!) and release the code :)
